Georgia Economic Reformer Among Resource Persons
As Sri Lanka prepares to formulate and implement reforms that will enable economic recovery, the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2022 hosted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will explore the reforms and their implications during Session 1 of the Summit. devoted to “economic reforms and implications”, on 6 December.
The session will begin with a fireside chat with former Georgia Finance Minister Aleksi Alexsishvili, who will describe Georgia’s history of economic reform.
He is widely credited with successfully implementing reforms in public finance, tax and customs policy and administration, as well as deregulation and liberalization. Central Bank Governor Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe outlines Sri Lanka’s economic reform plans.
The presentations and discussions that will follow will focus on the roadmap of the desired fiscal reforms, as well as the prioritization of reforms within the framework of an economic reform program, in addition to perspectives on the debt restructuring process and on the what a four-year International Monetary Fund is. will mean for the private sector.
The session will also explore the role that monetary policy and an independent central bank will play in the process, the shortcomings of the current framework, the recapitalization of banks and the strengthening of the social safety net to protect the growing segment of the vulnerable population.
Panelists for the session will include Chairman, John Keells Holdings and Deputy Vice President of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Krishan Balendra and former Director, Capacity Development, IMF, Dr. Sharmini Cooray.
Dr. Cooray is an economist who was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Group on Multilateral Engagement and Debt Sustainability, tasked with guiding Sri Lankan institutions and officials as they work with the IMF to resolve the debt crisis. from Sri Lanka.
Managing Director, Standard Chartered Bank, Sri Lanka, Bingumal Thewarathanthri will also join the roundtable along with Treasury Secretary, Mahinda Siriwardena.
The session will be moderated by Dr. Naveen Gunawardena. The Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2022 (SLES 2022) is to be held from December 5-6 as a hybrid summit, at the Shangri-La Hotel. The theme of the 22nd Sri Lanka Economic Summit is “Moving from Turmoil to Opportunity”.
