Student Loans Company appoints new CEO
SLC has embarked on a major transformation program to implement more modern, customer-focused processes and systems to better serve its eight million customers. This improved the overall health of the organization while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic, providing student funding to record numbers of students. SLC will continue to deliver on its vision of creating opportunity and delivering an exceptional customer experience while playing its vital role in delivering UK government education reforms, including the new Lifelong Loan Entitlement (LLE).
Chris has been instrumental in leading operations management over the past 18 months, and his leadership and operational experience will be critical to the organization when he becomes CEO.
Peter Lauener, President of SLC, said: “Chris joined our organization in May 2021 and has played a pivotal role in building new structures and leadership within our operations directorate, while guiding us successfully through two difficult rounds of student funding applications. Chris has extensive business and transformation experience ensuring he is the right person to continue to execute our strategy and build on our successes. He has a real commitment to putting customers and colleagues at the heart of SLC, which will be essential as we move forward. »
Chris has spent over 30 years in the financial services industry. He joined SLC after leaving the Co-operative Bank where he was Director of Client Services and Strategy and before that he was Director of Client Experience at Barclays. Chris has also held senior roles at Virgin Money, Tesco Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

SLC went through a competitive recruitment process which involved input from a panel of colleagues as well as the endorsement of the new Secretary of State for Education, Kit Malthouse. This is the first time that SLC has recruited within the organization for the position of General Manager.
